Dear Campers and Prospective Campers,
Area Meeting Camp is held annually for Friends and others who like the idea of camping together for a week. We choose a site within or near the A.M. area. There are usually about 40-60 campers. We bring our own tents to sleep in but share 2 marquees and a cook van. We share the preparation and eating of meals (mostly vegetarian), silent worship and daily activities and everybody spends one day helping with the chores. Activities may include walking, cycling, canoeing, swimming, sight-seeing, music, playing games and anything else people feel like organising. People of all ages come to camp, although children under 18 who come without their parents must have an adult camper (over 21) who has agreed to act as their guardian. Dogs cannot be brought to camp. No alcohol or illegal drugs are allowed on camp.
Camp this year will be held in the Elan Valley near Rhayader, at the same farm that were at in 2007, although in a different field. The area is really beautiful, ideal for walking, cycling and visiting places of interest, and has the benefit of a cycle track into the town in one direction and up the valley past the reservoirs in the other.
There will be two one-week camps this year: July 18th – July 25th and July 25th – August 1st
Campers may apply for one or two weeks. We strongly encourage people to come for a full week rather than part of a week, although young adults who have grown up at camp, may be accommodated for just a few days if that is all they can attend for, and numbers permit. Numbers at each camp will be limited to 60 each week. Applications will be dealt with on a first come first served basis and can only be accepted with a deposit. Camps often book up early so please apply in good time. It would help camp organisers if campers notify us of any cancellations immediately. Help with finance and equipment may be available for those who need it. Please contact Mikki Pullen on 01981 580056
The success of camp depends on everybody contributing what they can. Activities are fairly impromptu, but it helps with planning camp to have an idea of who may be willing to lead an activity or act as a day leader. Please indicate this on the application form. If you have been on camp before and would like to offer help with particular jobs, please write this on your application or let one of the camp planners know.
The next camp planning meeting will be held at Hereford FMH on Sunday, April 26th at 1 pm. If you would like to join Hereford Friends for Meeting for Worship, meeting is at 10.30am. If you are bringing children to meeting, please phone Mikki asap so they know they are expecting extras! We will then have a picnic lunch at around 12.30 before our meeting at 1.00. We encourage as many campers as possible to attend.
We try to keep camp fees to a minimum. However, we are trying to build up capital to help replace our cook van. Campers who are in a position to make a donation to our Equipment Fund may do so when they make a booking. There has been a no increase in fees this year. If cost prevents you from attending camp, there is a small bursary fund available, please contact Mikki for details.
